Tips from a Successful Candidate: Improving Maths Scores in Competitive Exams
I wanted to share my journey and the strategies that helped me improve my Maths scores in exams like the CGL and CHSL. I believe that with the right approach, anyone can achieve their goals, just like I did.
Here I refers to the person who succeded in SSC CGL.
1. Understand the Syllabus
When I first started preparing, I made sure to familiarize myself with the syllabus. For CGL, the Maths questions are mostly based on topics up to the 10th standard. Knowing what to focus on helped me streamline my preparation.
2. Consistency is Key
I set a goal to solve at least 100 Maths questions daily for six months. Sticking to this routine was crucial for my improvement. The more I practiced, the more confident I became.
3. Focus on One Book
Instead of getting overwhelmed with multiple resources, I chose one primary book for my preparation, like Kiran or Pinnacle. This allowed me to dive deep into the content without getting distracted, making it easier to retain what I learned.
4. Practice Previous Year Questions
I began each topic by reviewing my notes for 2-3 hours, then jumped into practice questions. When I encountered challenging problems, I resisted the urge to immediately look at the solutions. Instead, I tried to solve them using basic methods first.
5. Note-taking for Revisions
After attempting questions, if I struggled to solve them, I would check the solutions. But I made it a point to reattempt the questions without looking, marking them for revision later. This helped reinforce my learning.
6. Memorize Key Concepts
I realized the importance of memorizing multiplication tables up to 20, squares up to 40, and cubes up to 15. This knowledge saved me a lot of time during the exams and improved my speed.
7. Understanding Digit Sums
I learned about the Digit Sum concept, which was a game changer for quickly solving calculations and eliminating wrong options in multiple-choice questions. It really helped me in competitive exams.
8. Practice Basic Arithmetic Daily
Every day, I dedicated time to practicing basic calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This consistent practice enhanced my speed and accuracy significantly.
9. Formulas and Geometry, Trigonometry.
I kept a separate notebook for formulas related to Geometry and Mensuration. Regularly revising these formulas ensured I was well-prepared for any related questions in the exams.
10. Review and Reflect
After completing each chapter or topic, I revisited my notes and the challenging questions I had encountered. This periodic review solidified my understanding and kept the concepts fresh in my mind.
Final Thoughts
I want to emphasize that it’s perfectly normal to struggle at first. Everyone faces challenges in Maths, even those who excel later. The key is to confront your weaknesses, stay consistent, and maintain a positive attitude. Trust me, the hard work and dedication over these months will pay off!
